Since entering December, the three major U.S. stock indices have all reached historical highs, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average(DJI.US) closing above 45,000 for the first time, and the S&P 500 index(SPX.US) has hit a new high for the 56th time this year, marking its best performance for the first 11 months since 1997. As we approach 2025, Wall Street has started to predict the performance of the U.S. stock market for the next year. Overall, major banks are generally optimistic about the future performance of U.S. stocks.

The average year-end target point for the S&P 500 index(SPX.US) from major investment banks is predicted to be 6,667.33, which still represents a 9.5% increase from the current level of U.S. stocks.

After U.S. stocks have likely risen by more than 20% for two consecutive years, how much farther can the bull market go?

Views from Major Banks

  • Wells Fargo >> 7,007 points
It is anticipated that the Trump administration will welcome an increasingly favorable macroeconomic environment for the stock market, and that the Federal Reserve will gradually cut interest rates. In short, this constitutes a backdrop for the continued rise in the stock market.
  • Deutsche Bank >> 7,000 points
Strong investor activity and robust corporate buybacks will continue to support the supply and demand dynamics of the market. Earnings growth for the S&P companies is projected to increase by 11.6% next year, reaching $282.
  • Bank of America >> 6,666 points
Compared to the index, they are more optimistic about the performance of individual stocks in 2025, especially in sectors like financials, consumer discretionary, materials, real estate, and utilities. The stock-picking strategy tends towards large-cap value stocks with good prospects for cash returns, which are closely linked to the U.S. economy.
  • J.P. Morgan >> 6,500 points
Dubravko Lakos-Bujas, Chief Global Equity Strategist at J.P. Morgan, foresees the S&P 500 reaching 6,500 points by the end of 2025, underpinned by a resilient U.S. labor market, reduced interest rates, and surges in capital expenditures in AI technology. Despite bearish sentiments by former team lead Marko Kolanovic, who left in July 2024, Lakos-Bujas remains optimistic.
  • Goldman Sachs >> 6,500 points
David Kostin, Chief Equity Strategist at Goldman Sachs, predicts the S&P 500 rising to 6,500 by 2025 due to sustained economic and earnings growth, maintaining bond yields near current levels. He acknowledges high upside and downside risks in the U.S. market and speculates the "Big Tech Seven" will modestly outperform other S&P stocks, with Goldman favoring materials, software, and utilities.
  • BMO >> 6,700 points
Brian Belsky, chief investment strategist at BMO, said that the U.S. stock market is entering the third year of a cyclical bull market rebound. Since 1950, the S&P 500 has typically risen by 6% in cyclical bull market years. In the current bull market cycle, the annual increase in the stock market is significantly higher than historical levels. Secondly, Belsky pointed out that the earnings growth of the S&P 500 is underestimated and the market will continue to respond to loose monetary policy.
