The fact that multiple Palo Alto Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ:PANW) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Palo Alto Networks

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Independent Director, Carl Eschenbach, sold US$1.8m worth of shares at a price of US$237 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$320. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. It is worth noting that this sale was only 32% of Carl Eschenbach's holding.
